Mira Earth Studios, Valle de Guadalupe, Baja California, Mexico

Sustainability

A considered approach to building in one of Mexico's most dramatic wine-growing landscapes, Mira Earth Studios took home the Sustainability award at AHEAD Americas 2026.

Set among towering granite boulders in Mexico's Valle de Guadalupe, the boutique retreat, designed by Nicaraguan architect Juniette Bermúdez, comprises ten suites carefully integrated into the mountainside. Rammed earth walls use soil excavated from the site, green roofs are planted with native desert vegetation and locally crafted furnishings reflect an approach to hospitality rooted in environmental responsibility and a strong sense of place.

Sustainability extends beyond the architecture, with the 50cm-thick earth walls providing natural insulation, treated wastewater reused for irrigation, and use of community artisans and suppliers supporting the local economy. Located within Rancho Sordomudo, a foundation supporting deaf children in Baja California, the project also contributes to educational initiatives, demonstrating how thoughtful hospitality development can benefit both its natural surroundings and local community.
