Led by Jouin Manku, the 19-month restoration preserves the spirit of John Morford’s original interiors while allowing the hotel to evolve with greater warmth, fluidity and contemporary functionality. Refined materials, softened contrasts and gentler forms create a more tactile atmosphere, without detracting from the contemplative light and sense of calm.
The judges admired “the beauty of not changing”, recognising the restraint required to renew an icon without compromising its identity. Praised as a “calm, polished and confident” reimagining, the renovation sensitively enhances the guest experience while preserving the character that has defined the property since 1994.
