Fowey Hall Hotel, Cornwall, UK

Sustainability

Balancing heritage stewardship with cutting-edge environmental performance, Fowey Hall won the Sustainability award at AHEAD Europe 2025.

Led by Blake + Blake Architects with interiors by Studio Jill, the transformation of this Grade II-listed Cornish coastal landmark was anchored in a commitment to dramatically reduce operational energy use while elevating guest experience. The project introduced a thermally efficient external envelope, natural fibre insulation, solar-thermal glazing and recycled, low-carbon materials throughout. A trial bore hole uncovered a natural water source that, combined with a ground source heat pump system powered by an extensive photovoltaic array hidden behind the new mansard roofline, now enables the hotel to generate all of its own heating, cooling and hot water.

Passive measures — from brise-soleil solar control to insulated retractable pool covers — further reduce demand in the exposed, south-facing location overlooking the Estuary. The result is a self-sufficient, Net Zero Carbon hotel that also strengthens its connection to place through local suppliers, upcycled FF&E and thoughtful landscape interventions.
