Hotel Conversion

Breathing new life into more than 130 years of Omani heritage, Al Bait Al Sharqi in Muscat took home the Hotel Conversion award at AHEAD MEA 2026 – a sensitive transformation that celebrates the building's history.

Once a stopping point for merchants and travellers in the historic port district of Muttrah, the former residence has been reimagined as an intimate four-room boutique hotel, complete with a restaurant and gift shop. Led by architect Rafiah Al Bahlani of Jibal Al Hajar, the restoration carefully preserves three generations of construction, from traditional mud walls and stone masonry to later concrete additions. Rather than disguising these architectural layers, the design allows the building's evolution to remain visible, with local materials, traditional craftsmanship and thoughtfully integrated contemporary interventions creating a hospitality experience rich in character and authenticity. Even the property's historic hilltop well has been preserved, anchoring the transformation in its storied past.

The judges applauded the conversion's restraint and respect for its heritage, describing it as “a humble intervention”. Praised for its “beautiful transformation” and “layered and creative” public spaces, the project stood out as an example of adaptive reuse where “the soul of the property is not overpowered by the incoming design”.
