Sustainability

Demonstrating how luxury hospitality can take environmental responsibility, Sediba Sa Rona in Botswana's Okavango Delta won the Sustainability award at AHEAD MEA 2026, recognised for its sensitive transformation of a historic safari lodge into a contemporary eco-retreat.

On the banks of the Khwai River, the former Belmond Khwai River Lodge was redeveloped by Jack Alexander Studio with a circular approach to design, retaining and repurposing more than 50% of the original building materials. Reclaimed timber, gum poles, teak and thatch provide warmth and authenticity to the interior, while buildings are placed around existing trees, including a mature leadwood tree that anchors the main guest area. Suites were rebuilt on their original footprints, with elevated, concrete-free foundations minimising disturbance to the ecosystem. Powered primarily by solar energy and incorporating greywater recycling, the lodge demonstrates how thoughtful design decisions can reduce environmental impact while creating an intimate connection to the wilderness.

The project was commended as a “mature approach to adaptive reuse and environmental sensitivity”, celebrating its seamless relationship with the landscape and understated design. The panel was particularly impressed by the locally inspired materials, noting how the architecture avoids competing with its surroundings and instead enhances the natural beauty of the Delta.
